How Bad Actors Use Generative AI to Fuel Viral Celebrity Misinformation

DFL’s Research Associate, Anushka Jain was featured in an article in The Quint investigating the growing use of GenAI imagery in spreading misinformation.

Anushka shared how the growing accessibility of AI tools is not necessarily a good thing in the domain.

With the growing accessibility of AI tools, it is easier to create misleading content. Earlier, a certain level of skill set was required to create visuals with AI, whereas now, that barrier of skill has gone. However, we must acknowledge misinformation is not a new phenomenon but that modern AI tools have significantly lowered the effort required to create such content.

The rest of the story goes on to analyse 10 Facebook pages which create fake AI-generated content around Indian celebrities, cricketers and other public figures, and discusses the high social media engagement on posts using AI to spread false or misleading claims about celebrities and the idea of making the internet a clutter-free space.
